Ashtanga Yoga Insurance

Highly structured with a firm emphasis on the importance of asanas and posture, Ashtanga Yoga is a popular style of yoga that builds a foundation on traditional yoga to promote strength, flexibility, stress management, and inner peace with repetition and consistency.

When translated, Ashtanga Yoga literally means “eight-limbed yoga”—a reference to the eight limbs outlined by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. Unlike Vinyasa yoga (and other variations or styles of yoga), Ashtanga Yoga primarily focuses on a series of traditional postures that are performed in the same order every single time.

While some modern classes that teach Ashtanga yoga might not place quite such a strict emphasis on the precise repetition of asanas series in a specific order, the traditional practice of Ashtanga Yoga calls for students to work through five specific series (ranging from Primary to Advanced) in the same order every time.

Sometimes, Ashtanga and Vinyasa Yoga are used interchangeably because of their many similarities; however, the two are quite different and have strong distinctions. While both Ashtanga and Vinyasa focus strongly on asana (otherwise known as postures), Vinyasa Yoga offers the liberty to build unique, creative sequences each time. Traditional Ashtanga Yoga is predictable and reliable—the same poses in the same series in the same order, every time.

Like all styles of yoga, Ashtanga flaunts its own unique benefits that other styles might not so boldly offer—including repetition (which can help yogis tap into their inner being), accessibility for beginners, focus, and breathwork. But it also comes hand-in-hand with specific risks, too.

Unfortunately, accidents and physical exercise of any kind are inherently tied together.
While yoga of all types is generally a healthy, positive exercise that effectively creates strength, flexibility, and overall promotes wellbeing for the body, injuries can still happen.

Ashtanga Yoga can be uniquely dangerous for students in this regard because of its strict series of postures and its accessibility for beginners. Inexperienced yogis are prone to bend until something breaks, and unfortunately, even trained yogis can experience injuries during Ashtanga Yoga due to its repetitious nature. Oftentimes, when an injury occurs in the yoga studio, the trainee rarely takes the blame—that’s how claims, lawsuits, and other issues arise.

As a yoga instructor, it’s crucial to ensure that you’ve got a plan when it comes to protecting yourself, your career, and even your yogis.

That’s where beYogi can help.
