Yoga Liability Insurance Policy Details

Professional & General Liability: $2MM per occurrence / $3MM annually

General and professional liability are two of the most important coverages in any yoga insurance policy. They help protect you from costly claims, so you are not paying out of pocket for medical bills, legal costs, and a client's personal property damage.

  • General Liability: General liability covers accidents that happen around your space but are not directly tied to your instruction, like slips, trips, or property damage. For example, if a client trips on a rug in your studio, this coverage can help pay for their medical expenses.
  • Professional liability: Professional liability covers claims related to your work as an instructor, like injuries that happen during a class. If a client gets hurt attempting a pose or claims your guidance caused harm, this coverage can help with legal costs and potential lawsuits.

See below for Common Yoga Liability Claims.

Personal Injury and Advertising Injury: $2MM

These coverages protect yoga teachers from liability for non-physical injuries or damages arising from actions such as defamation, false arrest, invasion of privacy, and copyright/trademark infringement in advertising and marketing.

Example situations:

  • Posting a client testimonial or transformation photo without proper consent, and the client claims their privacy was violated.
  • Using copyrighted music, images, or phrases in class promotions or on social media, and the owner claims infringement.
  • Writing a blog post or social caption that unintentionally defames another studio, teacher, or wellness brand.

Identity Protection Coverage: $25,000

With the potential of identity theft being greater than ever, protecting yourself from this is becoming a priority for many yoga professionals. beYogi includes a bonus coverage of  $25,000 for identity theft. This coverage is designed to help you recoup financial losses due to an online impersonator.

Occurrence Form Coverage

There are two distinct types of liability insurance: occurrence form and claims-made. The key is understanding how they operate.

Occurrence form, simply put, offers coverage even after your policy expires. We call it "Lifetime coverage". For example, if you are insured from January 1st 2025 to January 1st 2026 (12 months) and an incident occurs in May 2025, but the claim is not filed until May 2026, beYogi still covers you even if your insurance has expired. Not all yoga insurance companies offer this type, but we highly reccomend it.

A claims-made policy offers coverage only while your policy is active. So, once your policy has expired, under no circumstances will the insurance help you if a claim has been submitted after expiration, even if the incident occurred while your policy was active.

No Waivers Required

beYogi does not require liability waivers to complete your insurance purchase. Here is a free yoga teacher liability waiver template for your use.

Common Yoga Liability Claims

Here are some of the most common liability claims we encounter. For a deeper dive, check out our detailed examples of covered claims.

Clients Falling: A student reports an incident of falling during a yoga class alleging unsafe conditions or negligence.

Allergic Reactions: A client alleges an allergic reaction arising from the use of essential oils added to a diffuser during a yoga class.

Injuries From Improper Cueing: A client reports a pulled hip flexor alleging it was a result of improper cueing from the instructor.

These are not real claims but representations of claims made in the yoga industry. Similar claims do not guarantee coverage.

What Makes beYogi Different?

Yoga Teacher Insurance Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much will yoga teacher insurance actually cost?

If you are buying from us, it will cost you about $179/YR, but most yoga liability insurance companies offer insurance policies between $179 and $400 annually.

Some insurance companies may offer a low premium but tack on additional fees for extra services, coverage, or benefits. When considering which insurance company is best for yoga teachers, consider what the policy includes with the premium and what costs extra before making your final decision.

Discover how to spot a good price-to-coverage ratio by reading our yoga teacher insurance cost guide. We also have a post on tips for finding an inexpensive policy.

How do I find the best yoga insurance for me?

Insurance can vary greatly from provider to provider. It is important to research and determine what might be the best fit for you.

Follow these steps to help determine what your needs are:
  1. Compare prices
  2. Check to see if the modalities you practice are covered
  3. Where does the coverage extend to? Only at a studio? Or does it cover you no matter where you are teaching?
  4. Compare what additional benefits are offered free of charge or for a price
  5. Read our complete guide to yoga instructor insurance to understand more about how yoga liability insurance benefits you.

What is yoga teacher insurance, exactly?

Yoga teacher insurance is a specialized liability policy designed for yoga instructors and wellness professionals. It protects against risks associated with teaching, typically including both professional and general liability coverage.

Yoga insurance will help cover unexpected costs like a client’s medical expenses after an injury in your class or reimbursing them for personal belongings damaged during an accident.

What modalities are covered by yoga liability insurance?

From Ashtanga to Restorative yoga and everything in between, there are hundreds of different types, as well as many complementary healing practices. beYogi covers over 500 yoga styles and healing practices under all of our policies.

What is an additional Insured?

An additional insured is a person, place, or organization added to your policy who can benefit from your coverage should a claim occur that also impacts them. By naming them as an additional insured, you are extending your coverage to them, it is not a policy of their own.

  •  1 Additional Insured: $10
  • Unlimited Additional Insureds: $30

Does my yoga studio's insurance cover me?

A studio’s policy is designed to protect the business first, not the individual teachers who work there. Coverage may extend to its full-time employees, but we would advise having your own individual liability insurance policy is a good decision.

You may also teach outside the studio, such as at a park, private event, or workshop with a colleague. Without your own coverage, you could be left unprotected if a claim arises.

How do I file an insurance claim with beYogi?

This may be earlier than you expect, but as soon as you know of an incident that occurred under your instruction, you should notify us. Either call our U.S. based team or log into your portal for more ways to begin the process.  To understand this process in more depth,  read our blog about the step-by-step claim process.

Should I get liability insurance if I am a student in yoga teacher training?

Yes, when you're still learning your craft as a professional yoga instructor, you could make a mistake that leads to an injury or an accident. So, it's pivotal to maintain the safety net of yoga instructor insurance as a student.

We offer a discounted student rate to our up-and-coming yogis. Students can enjoy the same coverage and peace of mind as our professional policyholders while enjoying that student discount as well.

What yoga styles are covered for pre-recorded video?

All of our over 60+ yoga styles are covered.  Get more information about what online yoga teachers need to know to stay protected in our virtual yoga insurance guide.

I only teach online yoga. Do I need insurance?

Yes, whether you are teaching in-studio, at a client's home, at your neighborhood park, or online, you need liability insurance.

Can I just use a really good waiver instead?

A liability waiver can help discourage lawsuits and claims; however, it does not guarantee protection. If the waiver is incomplete or successfully challenged, you could be personally responsible for legal fees, medical expenses, and potentially even lost income.  With liability insurance, your insurance company will fight the suit by hiring a lawyer on your behalf, and if you are found at fault, they will pay the required amounts!
