smaller, more tangible tasks that you can cross off as you go. This way, you’ll feel more confident along the way, and you won’t miss anything important.

Here is how I break up the development process:

Step 1: Define Your Brand and Objectives. Develop your mission, vision, and values. Use those insights to really hone in on the objective of your website. How will it support your business? Attract new students? Provide class schedule? Offer digital and on-demand content?


Step 2: Understand Your Target Audience. Research your audience’s preferences, needs, and online behaviors. Where are they looking for services like yours? What language do they use? Begin formulating website content to meet your audience's expectations and needs.


Step 3: Choose a Website Builder. Research is the only way to ensure you make the right choice. Website builders are a dime-a-dozen. Make sure you find one that truly fits your needs and is compatible with your budget.


Step 4: Outline Your Site Structure. Don’t feel like you need to have a ton of pages before you launch. There are really only a handful of essential pages you need to have a great yoga website: home, about, offerings, schedule, and contact.

The more friction prospects and even existing students experience on your website, the more likely they are to find a site with a better experience – and I’m sure they will be able to do so quickly. Don’t lose students to easily avoidable mistakes.

User-Friendly Design

Internet users spend less than 15 seconds on a given website—not on a single page but an entire site. Folks will leave your site almost as soon as they enter if they can’t get their needs met quickly. 

Luckily, there are some simple tips to make your site more user-friendly:

  • White space is your friend. Keep your copy tight, get straight to the point, ensure paragraphs are no more than 2-3 sentences, and generally make your page easy to scan. Bullet lists and numbered lists are great ways to summarize dense text easily. 
  • Ensure navigating your website is intuitive. What pages are in your main navigation bar? If you have drop-downs in your navigation, make sure subpages are nested under the right category. Otherwise, folks will get confused. 
  • Ensure your site meets accessibility standards. People of all physical abilities, body types, and ages use the internet to find a place to do yoga! Use this free evaluation tool to maintain acceptable accessibility levels. Here is a short list of criteria for accessibility.
    • Add alt text to your image so screen readers can describe them to users
    • If you have video content on your site, ensure closed captions are an option

It’s okay if you have old blog posts and such that take several clicks to find. Those won’t make or break a prospective client’s decision. However, if you have any compelling guides, insightful comparisons, or high-converting blog posts, I recommend holding valuable pages like that to the 3-click rule.
